Water
Water, also known as H2O, is a chemical compound composed of hydrogen and oxygen elements. It is an essential inorganic substance for all living organisms and plays a crucial role in various physical and biological processes. Water is a universal solvent, facilitating numerous chemical reactions and life-sustaining functions.
1. Water states:
Water exists in three states solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapor). When water evaporates, it forms water vapor or steam, which is part of the water cycle.
2. Distribution on Earth:
About 71% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. Of all water:
- 97% is in the oceans (salty).
- 2.4% is in glaciers and ice caps.
-0.6% is freshwater in rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
- Only 0.001% is atmospheric water vapor.
3. Water cycle:
Water continuously undergoes evaporation (or transpiration), condensation, precipitation (rain), and runoff, forming a cycle that sustains life and influences weather patterns.
4. Importance:
Freshwater is essential for ecosystems, biological processes, and human needs like drinking, agriculture, and industry.
