Ruwanwelisaya

Ruwanwelisaya is a great stupa located in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is one of the largest stupas in the world and a sacred place for Buddhists in Sri Lanka.


History

  • Ruwanwelisaya was built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC. It was built to enshrine the relics of the Buddha.

Features

  • Ruwanwelisaya is built with a large number of bricks, and its height is 103 meters (338 feet). The circumference of the stupa is 290 meters (950 feet), making it one of the largest stupas in the world.

Sacred Place

  • Ruwanwelisaya is a sacred place for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Many Buddhists visit the stupa to pay homage.
